Lima – it never rains….
After our amazing experiences in Cuzco, we reluctantly boarded our flight to Lima. We had booked accommodation in Lima and while we realised that we really wanted to stay in Cuzco, we decided that we would go back later and revisit many of the places we’d been to and visit many more!!
We had no expectations at all about Lima, we knew it never rained there but basically not much else. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived in Miraflores.
It reminded us – loosely – of the Gold Coast, in Queensland – Australia, lots of high rise apartment buildings, some stylish and some tacky restaurants and bars…and generally a fairly relaxed vibe. Our apartment was located on a fairly busy street, but it was comfortable and had everything we needed!
Once we got ourselves settled in we went exploring and found lots of interesting places close by. We had our first Lima lunch at a local restaurant, and despite not knowing what we were ordering – we went for the daily specials – a huge bowl of salad for me and a steak and fries for Ray….it was a delicious meal and we had a few laughs with the waiter – whose English was as bad as our Spanish. We were stunned when we came to pay…we noticed that the waiter had undercharged us… approx $7.00 AUD (21 soles) instead of $10.00 AUD (31 soles) !! So, of course we showed him his mistake and paid him the correct amount, much to his surprise. This is the average amount we paid to eat out in Lima – and most of the meals were delicious and so large that we couldn’t eat everything. We ate out a lot!
Miraflores is a seaside suburb, and I think it would be a fun place to be in the summer time. The beach is located at the base of very high sand dunes, although there is no sand – only big river stones – at the beach. The waves were clean and there were a lot of brave surfers out every day. I say brave, because the water didn’t exactly look like it was ‘clean’ – lots of brown patches…hmmm.
The cliffs provide a perfect launching facility for Paragliding, and on the weekend it was standing room only for people wanting to jump off a cliff strapped to a strange man! I was content to watch and listen to the screams. Most of the pilots looked extremely competent and all the landings I watched were perfect. Still didn’t make me want to do it!
The City centre of Lima was filled with lovely buildings, parks and shops and the bus system is awesome! It is very new and the buses travel along a dedicated lane, very much like a train stopping at stations along the way. Great way to get around and the ticketing system is simple – even if you don’t speak Spanish!
One thing that was starting to have an impact on us was the humidity and the fact that we never saw the sun for the entire time we were in Lima. As I mentioned previously – it doesn’t rain in Lima, but it is always cloudy and feels like it’s going to rain. Very strange. The light is never bright and after our wonderful enlightening experiences in Cuzco, we are really looking forward to seeing the sun and the moon again!.
Next stop on our excellent adventures – Buenos Aires!!!
