Buenos Aires – first impressions…

We arrived in Buenos Aires after an uneventful flight from Lima – our concerns about being grounded by the volcanic dust cloud were unfounded and we boarded our scheduled flights on time.

We are in Palermo – which is a lovely suburb, with wide streets and lots of parks! Our apartment is lovely – downstairs living and bedroom upstairs. Deb has a small desk with a window overlooking the park and Ray is very comfortable on the dining table – listening to lots of classics (INXS, Men at Work, Foo Fighters) on the radio – fm channel 102.3 (ciento dos puenta tres – as he loves to say!)

Beautiful Building

Beautiful Architecture in Palermo

We spent the first few days here aclimatising ourselves to the area – we located the local supermarkets, found a lot of great cafes, patisseries, (uh oh) and ATMs. Palermo has a lot of tree lined avenues and beautiful buildings everywhere. Many embassies are located here, as well as Art Galleries, the Evita museum, the botanical gardens, the Zoo and the magnificent Rose Garden. It is a lovely place to be!

Wine Store

Ray was VERY HAPPY to find this huge wine store - close by!!

Since visiting other parts of Buenos Aires, we have decided that Ray did very well choosing this particular apartment in this part of the city. It is imperative that we learn more SPANISH!! :)

Our first weekend was quite cold and it was raining intermittently, but we ventured into the centre of the city – which is pretty much like every city in the world – busy, congested and a bit grubby! We did however, stumble across an incredible museum tucked away behind the Presidential Palace.

Arches

Arches in the Bicentennial Museum - underground

It is built over a site that has been excavated and includes a lot of tunnels and rooms that must have been built to protect the city from invaders coming in from the north. The Museum was built to commemorate the bicentennial of Argentina in 2010 – and while everything is naturally in Spanish – it was definitely a highlight!

Stay tuned for our next update…
