A Night at the OPERA!
Last week we took a tour of the magnificent Teatro Colon – Buenos Aires Opera House – which re-opened in 2010 following nearly 5 years of restoration.

Guided tours are the requirement to see the inside of the building and our tour arrived at the ‘Presidential Box’ as rehersals for the latest production were underway. Our lovely guide implored us to be quiet and not take any photos as the orchestra was about to start playing.
What a treat this turned out to be – we got to hear the orchestra and a magnificent baritone singing one of the songs from Verdi’s opera “Simon Boccanegra”.
Both Ray and I were so impressed that we decided that it was a perfect time to experience our first operatic performance!
We returned to the theatre box office and purchased opening night tickets – very high up! But directly in front of the stage.
What an experience! We had no idea what the opera was about – but google is our friend (see the link above) so we did a bit of research and off we went. The opera was sung in Italian – and there were Spanish subtitles – so it was very fortunate that we had a bit of an idea of what was going on!
It was an unforgettable evening – being in the magnificent theatre, with incredible acoustics – not one microphone or sound system in the place and we could here perfectly – even being up so high. I managed to record a small amount of the music and hope you can get an idea of how wonderful the experience was.
If you ever get the chance to go to the Opera – just do it!! It will be an experience you will remember for ever!
